Power Generation
DONG Energy is Denmark’s largest power generator. We produce more than 50% of Denmark's power and approximately 40% of the district’s heat. Furthermore, we are the leading thermal generator by volume on Nord Pool. 87 percent of our 6.5 GW capacity originates from thermal power plants and the remaining is wind and hydro.
High efficiency generation
Most of our thermal plants combine heat and power generation for greater efficiency.
Oil & Gas Exploration & Production
DONG Energy has a portfolio of 68 natural gas and oil exploration and production licences strategically located in the following regions:
- Denmark - central North Sea area
- Norway – mid North Sea
- UK – West of Shetlands
- The Faroe Islands
- Greenland
Lots of capacity for storing CO2
Denmark offers underground storage capacity for several hundred years of CO2 generation. In other words, we have the storage capacity and we are sure that it will stay down there.
For example, CO2 can be stored in depleted oil fields. This has the extra benefit that we can actually enhance oil recovery from these fields. Oil fields are ideal for storing CO2, because oil and natural gas is held in natural traps that it cannot escape from. Similarly, the CO2 stored there will not be able to escape.
CO2 can also be stored in deep layers of sand upwardly sealed by impervious stratums of lime or clay. There are several ideal structures in Denmark’s geology meeting these requirements. Today, they are already being used to store natural gas.
When we create a storage site at DONG Energy, we will, of course, allow other energy producers to make use of it as well. We want our efforts to be good for the world, not just for DONG Energy.
